Cooling Tower Maintenance Inspection
Regular inspections and maintenance are essential for keeping cooling towers operating efficiently, safely, and reliably. A proactive maintenance program helps reduce energy consumption, extend equipment lifespan, minimize costly repairs, and ensure compliance with health and safety standards.
A regular inspection schedule ensures ongoing reliability and early detection of potential problems.
• Monthly or Quarterly: Perform visual and mechanical checks to catch minor issues early and verify system performance.
• Annually: Conduct a comprehensive inspection, including structural assessment and a full cleaning of critical components.
Initial and Seasonal Start-Up
- Remove any debris, such as leaves and dirt from the air inlets.
- Flush the basin and strainer screens to remove any sediment or dirt.
- Remove the strainer screen, clean it, and reinstall it.
- Test the mechanical float valve to see if it operates freely.
- Inspect water distribution system nozzles and clean them.
- Check to ensure drift eliminators are securely in place and in the proper orientation.
- Adjust fan belt tension as required.
- Lubricate and check fan shaft bearings prior to seasonal start-up.
- Turn the fan(s) by hand to insure it turns freely without obstructions.
- Inspect the fan blades.
- Fill the basin manually up to the overflow connection.
After the Unit Has Been Energized, We Will Check the Following:
- Adjust the mechanical float valve as required.
- Unit basin should be filled to the proper operating level.
- Verify fan is rotating in the proper direction.
- Measure the voltage and current on all three power leads.
Seasonal Start-Up Checklist
When the system is to be shut down for the season, the following services should is performed.
- The cooling unit water basin will be drained.
- The water basin will be flushed and cleaned with the suction strainer screens in place.
- The suction strainer screens will be cleaned and re-installed.
- The water basin drain should be left open.
- The fan shaft bearings and motor base adjusting screws should be lubricated.
- The water makeup valve will be closed. All water make-up piping will be drained.
- Power off the cooling tower.
